MLB 2K6 Freezing Issue Fix in Test
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Sports, Xbox 360, Xbox Live,
2K Sports has posted yet another update in their forums, and they currently have a fix for the MLB 2K6 freezing issue on the Xbox 360 in compliance testing at Microsoft. When the update passes acceptance testing, it should become available as an auto update for all Xbox Live Silver and Gold customers. Other methods of obtaining the patch have not yet been announced, so those users without network-connected Xbox 360 consoles may have to wait a bit longer for an official fix.

Microsoft to Update Xbox 360 CPU
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Corporate News, Hardware, Xbox 360,
Microsoft, working with its CPU manufacturing partner, Chartered Semiconductor, looks to move the Xbox 360 CPU die-size to a 65nm process. The current Xbox 360 CPU is manufactured on a 90nm die, and through this reduction, Microsoft hopes to reduce heat expenditure, power utilization, and manufacturing cost. These kinds of moves will be important in the future to keep the costs of producing the Xbox 360 competitive, and is the kind of hardware change that never happened on the original Xbox. Microsoft needs to have better ownership of the hardware platform for the Xbox 360 so that they can continue to produce newer iterations of the hardware, similar to the way Sony has approached the PS2, and Nintendo has continued to tweak and update the Gameboy Advance.

Sega announced today that the latest game in the Phantasy Star series, Phantasy Star Universe will be available this Fall for the Xbox 360, as well as the previously announced PS2 and PC versions. The press release drops a few more details about the game, including what appears to be a solo mode with a more fully developed story than the previous versions. Xbox 360 Production to Reach Over One Million Per Month by Year End
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Corporate News, Hardware, Xbox 360,
A report from the Wall Street Journal quoted from Gamedaily.biz indicates that one of Microsoft’s hardware manufacturing partners, Wistron, is seeking to ramp production up to one million units per month by the end of 2006. Microsoft has been aggressively pursuing other territories now that production in the US and UK seems to have gotten under control. While gamers can now see actual Xbox 360 boxes on the shelves at Costco, and Internet profiteering is slowing down, Microsoft still needs to boost production to meet both expanding demand for the Xbox 360 and to meet its goal of worldwide domination. By boosting production, Microsoft hopes to take advantage of the additional time granted by the PS3 delay as well as be seen on store shelves as the predicted PS3 shortages happen during the holiday season.

A Brief History of Kameo
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Action, Adventure, Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox 360,
A combination review/retrospective of Kameo has been published on Siliconera; the review generally falls in line with the web consensus, getting an overall recommendation. Perhaps more interesting is the evolution of the game itself. Kameo was originally slated for the Nintendo Gamecube, and first made its appearance at E3 2001. A little over four years later, the game finally shipped for the Xbox 360. In between, the game underwent some fairly significant changes. Character designs were altered somewhat, and gameplay and combat styles received somewhat more dramatic modifications.
The review doesn’t discuss the repetitive nature of the game, but it feels like some of the character and combat changes were made to alleviate this. The different characters and control styles don’t always work out (see the water boss battle) but they did serve to break up the game into manageable chunks. It now feels like the segments spent as Kameo are the most repetitive and least interesting segments of the game, and its possible that Rare’s attempts to shake up the combat and character design were attempts to mitigate this.

Oblivion Quest Orrery Available on Xbox Live
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Internet, Role Playing Games, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace,
Major Nelson recently posted that the Orrery quest for Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is now available on Xbox Live for a low 150 points. The backlash has already started over in the official Oblivion forums for the game; people that have downloaded the additional quest complain that this add-on is less valuable than the previous horse armor premium content. Gamers impatient for the gameplay patch from Bethesda are also questioning the priorities of the developers.

MLB 2K6 Freezing Workarounds
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Corporate News, Mods/Hacks, Sports, Xbox 360,
2KSports posted an update on their official forums, describing a couple of workarounds for the MLB 2K6 freezing issues users are reporting:
In the meantime, our dedicated 2K Sports QA team has tested and confirmed two work-around methods for those consumers who are experiencing the “freeze” issue:
1) Remove or disable the HDD
or,
2) Load three different Xbox 360 games to the main title screen of each game then load Major League Baseball 2K6 on Xbox 360. All three Xbox 360 games must be completely different before loading Major League Baseball 2K6.
Those people with the Xbox 360 hard drive and no memory card to save their games probably won’t find the first solution to be a very good one, and the second is cumbersome to say the least. The 2KSports team is still working on developing an official patch for the game, indicating that there is probably not a media-based issue with the game, but something code-based changed between the review copies and retail versions went out. No mention was made about fixing some of the control issues reported in many of the published reviews for the game.
